Usage of the degree symbol

Degree Celsius symbol

Symbol: ℃
This is also called the degree Celsius sign (or, incorrectly, the degree Celcius sign)

The above ℃ sign is a symbol on its own; it is different from °C which is the degree symbol followed by the capital letter C. Note the space before the degree sign.

Examples of how to use the degree Celsius symbol:
25 degrees Celsius = 25 ℃
0 degrees Celsius = 0 ℃
-4 degrees Celsius = -4 ℃

The Celsius scale, also known as the centigrade scale, is a temperature scale used by the International System of Units.

Degree Fahrenheit Symbol

Symbol: ℉

The above ℉ symbol is a symbol on its own; it is different from °F which is the degree symbol followed by the capital letter F. Note the space after the number.

Examples of how to use the degree Fahrenheit symbol:
the water’s freezing point is 32 degrees Fahrenheit = 32 ℉
the water’s boiling point is 212 degrees Fahrenheit = 212 ℉

The Fahrenheit scale is a temperature scale based on the scale proposed in 1724 by Dutch–German–Polish physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. It uses the degree Fahrenheit as the unit.

For temperature, there is a space between the number and the degree symbol, but no space between the degree symbol and the letter that indicates the scale being used, e.g. 100 °C, 212 °F.
Note: degree symbols are not used for temperatures measured on the Kelvin scale, e.g. +273.15 K.

Angles in Mathematics

Examples:
the right angle is 90 degrees = 90°

A degree (in full, a degree of arc, arc degree, or arcdegree), usually denoted by ° (the degree symbol), is a measurement of a plane angle, defined so that a full rotation is 360 degrees (360°).

For degrees of arc, the degree symbol follows the number without any intervening space, e.g. 180°.
